Winners of the Paul Pholeros Architecture Scholarship 2024
The recipients of the Paul Pholeros Architecture Scholarships 2024 are Frank Hollingsworth from Toowoomba and Almo Troup from Melbourne.
Huge congratulations to both. The PPF welcomes you to the team.
Frank Hollingsworth. Shade Structures for Northern Australia: A Typological Study.
Frank focussed on one of the many social purposes of architecture ie the creation and amplification of public spaces. His research examined existing shade solutions as part of urban planning and architectural strategies to mitigate heat in hotter and tropical climates. His study resulted in the development of 2 documents:
A Guidebook for Shade Structures in Northern Australia which provides a structured theoretical understanding of the concepts influencing shade and aspects to be considered when designing for shade.
The Atlas of Shade is a collection of examples and analyses that illustrate the concepts and technologies laid out in the Guidebook.
These documents are a valuable resource for designers, engineers, students, anyone who who is interested in the various approaches to dealing with shade and designing appropriate structures.
Bravo to Frank for these beautiful and useful resource documents, the PPF is very proud to have supported you.

Almo Troup. Reviving Our Resources.
Almo’s study addressed the resource consuming and increasingly unnecessary production of virgin building materials, to be replaced with increased use of recycled or recyclable materials.
Building on information and experiences from design professionals and industry leaders in fields of waste utilisation, Almo produced a documentary film, “Nothing Wasted”, to illustrate how building waste can be channelled into practical and beautiful architectural objects.
There has been a lot of interest in this informative film, particularly from teaching institutions.
This film can be viewed on the the PPF Youtube Channel.
Bravo Almo, a great job and PPF is very proud to have supported you and your production team.
